EMT

Overview

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate provides entry-level job training for employment in a Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance service or satisfies the Fire and Police Department requirement for training at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) level.  Areas covered include those identified in the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards for Emergency Medical Responder and EMT. Cleared criminal background checks and required medical clearance for clinical training.

Credentialing

After successful completion of the certificate program, students are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians cognitive and practical examinations.

Career Opportunities

The EMT certificate prepares students for job opportunities as an EMT in a BLS medical transportation service or in an Advanced Life Support ambulance service that combines EMTs and paramedics. Many Fire and Police Departments require EMT certification as a job requirement. EMTs are also currently being hired as Emergency Room Technicians in hospitals across the US.

The Emergency Medical Technician certificate covers the skills needed to provide the first level of pre-hospital care in the Emergency Medical Services system. An EMT is prepared to care for patients at the scene of an accident or illness and while transporting patients by ambulance to the hospital, has the skills needed to assess a patient’s condition, and manage medical and trauma emergencies.

AEMT

Overview

The primary focus of the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

Award Outcomes

  • Demonstrate ability to perform an appropriate primary/initial assessment of the ill or injured patient in the prehospital setting.
  • Complete an appropriate secondary/focused history and physical exam in the pre-hospital setting.
  • Apply fundamental knowledge of general anatomy and physiology, scene information and patient assessment findings, and providing patient care based on those findings.
  • Demonstrate AEMT skills associated with established standards and procedures for a variety of patient encounters.
  • Apply fundamental knowledge of pharmacology as it applies to the scope of practice of an AEMT based on assessment findings, and appropriate treatment modalities.
  • Apply fundamental knowledge of the EMS system, safety/well-being of the EMT, medical, Legal, and ethical issues to the provision of emergency care.
  • Prepare for incident response and EMS operations
  • Integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to provide appropriate patient care
  • Demonstrate appropriate communication
  • Communicate effectively with others

EMR

Overview

The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Class is an entry-level class that will prepare individuals for a variety of pre-hospital, industrial, and first responder settings. EMR can refer to a variety of positions including a firefighter, law enforcement officer, public works employee, emergency manager, fire marshal, HAZMAT coordinator, technical specialist, incident commander, fire chief, or a member of State Emergency Management who provides, plans, or directs emergency health or safety services.

This course is designed to provide the First Responder at the scene of a medical or trauma emergency with the necessary knowledge and skill to manage patient care until the arrival of Emergency Medical Technicians or Paramedics. The course is intended for Law Enforcement, Firefighters, Rescue Personnel, Ski Patrol, Athletic Coaches, School Nurses, Camp Counselors, Special Event Coverage Personnel, Industrial Emergency response teams and other individuals charged with “first response” duties.

Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are eligible to seek national certification as a First Responder (EMR) through the National Registry of EMTs. Our course has been designed to meet or exceed the National Standard Curriculum for Emergency Medical Responder (First Responder) as developed by the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
